When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry? I’ve always had a passion for painting as long as I can remember. I’d spend hours blending colours on a canvas not knowing what I was painting until I was finished. When it came time to choose my career I decided to pursue a different avenue initially and went to university, but didn’t fall in love with what I was doing. I then made the choice to enroll in hair school, it seemed like it ticked all my boxes; painting, uplifting people, a great culture, energy,  fashion and design, and most importantly never ending room to grow.

There’s no glass ceiling in this industry and you can truly go as far as you are willing to work, no matter what your aunt Brenda says. I started my hair styling career just over 4 years ago and I’m constantly challenging myself, learning and growing.

What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle? I live for messy styles, dimensional blondes and smooth transitions.

Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity? My style changes like the wind but I know you can never go wrong with a great pair of jeans, a black leather jacket and a red lip!

What is your favourite Redken product? Fashion Waves 07 and Powder Grip are my go-to products for sexy bedhead waves and the Extreme line is my to-go for avoiding not-so-hot split ends and damaged hair!

When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took the exam in October 2019 and the preparation was a lot of hours studying and practicing. Luckily I have several coworkers who are Colour Certified who helped keep me sane.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified? So much more confidence, specifically during colour corrections. I love the challenge.

What sets you apart from other stylists? Aside from being Colour Certified I’m also a Babe Master Extension Technician . I love all transformations big and small. Quality and integrity are always my priority and it’s great being able to offer brighter results or subtle change without ever risking the hair.

Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified? I believe everyone should strive to elevate the industry and the first step to doing that is education! The more you know and understand the better your work will be and the more you will grow.

When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry? I feel as though my Barbies knew well before I did that I was destined to do hair. I’ve always had my hands in hair, from school dances to knocks on my university dorm room. It still seemed everyone other than me knew that my passion should be my career. I’ve been happily doing hair for nearly a decade now.

What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle? I love doing soft, dimensional colors as well as vivid and vibrant colors.  Present me with a challenge and I will gladly accept!

Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity? My personal style varies. I do tend to stick to more classic pieces with a pop of color. I love using social media for inspiration. I’m sure my husband thinks I have no life, I’m always getting sucked into hair videos on my downtime.

What is your favourite Redken product? It’s difficult to pinpoint just one,  having to choose I’d say Redken One United. It’s so versatile and can be used on anyone.

When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took my exam in 2014. I’m not a huge bookworm I must say. I was fortunate enough to have apprenticed under Barb Horsman and worked along side her. I also had coworkers studying with me and they kept me on track.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified? Not only did becoming certified expand my knowledge and boost my confidence, it also boosted my (new) clients confidence in me. It’s reassuring to a new client who doesn’t know what you are capable of to know you have advanced training.

What sets you apart from other stylists? I’m not saying others do not do this, but I listen. I always want my client to feel confident in what they are wearing, as your hair is your daily accessory. I want to know their likes and dislikes. I try to educate them as much as I can so we can communicate with the same verbiage and they are not as nervous knowing what to ask for.

Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified? Nobody knows everything and there is something for everyone with certification.  Whether it is proper practices, time and efficiency, applications or a confidence boost. Highly recommend it for any stylist of any experience level.

When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took the Redken Certified Hair Colorist Exam in October 2018. The exam preparation was a lot of work and hours spent practicing and studying. I’m so lucky to have written my exam with three of my co-workers, who were great support.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified? The greatest benefit of becoming certified has been the confidence I’ve developed in my knowledge of Redken’s coloring standards. For anyone contemplating doing the exam – I am always here to help.

What sets you apart from other stylists? What sets me apart from other stylists are my listening skills. I pride myself on a great consultation and being a patient listener.

When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry? I had always dreamt of being a stylist, I just didn’t always believe in myself. If you love what you do and you’re truly passionate about it, you can do anything you set your mind to.

I’ve been in the industry for 7 years now, and really enjoy working with color. I love being able to create new looks for people and make them feel good about themselves.

What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle? Balayage is my specialty in the salon, and my favourite color trend to create; I hope it never goes away! In terms of hairstyles, right now the lob is my favourite. There is something so satisfying in seeing that nice clean, blunt line in the cut, but I love adding texture to the style for a fun, tousled finish.

Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity? My personal style is a little eclectic. Typically, I lean towards boho trends with more neutral, muted tones. In terms of inspiration, social media is a huge influence for me. I’m always looking for beautiful blends of color, and tips and tricks to better my own business.

What is your favourite Redken product? One of my go-to Redken products is Triple Take hairspray. I love the hold it provides in finishing, but leaves the hair touchable and never flakey. I can’t be without it!

When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took the exam in October 2016. Preparation was intense, practicing with all the material and study guides available. I took the exam with a fellow stylist and we would often go over charts and information together.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified?  Passing the exam and becoming certified shows how hard you worked to get where you are and that you are dedicated to your craft. It helps boost confidence in both color correcting and color formulating and pushes you to better meet your clients needs.

What sets you apart from other stylists? I’m an extreme perfectionist. I’m always striving to get my clients the color they’re looking to achieve. I make sure to provide all the information they need, setting realistic expectations on results achievable, while still keeping their hair healthy.

Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified? Other stylists should strive to become Redken Color Certified to really push themselves as a colorist, and truly be the best at Redken color. This exam shows the level of dedication you have for your craft, and how hard you’re willing to work to prove yourself in this industry.

When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry?

I’ve always been interested in fashion, I have older sisters and when I was young I would love to be involved in styling them and helping them choose outfits. I’ve always been interested in hairstyling; however, I decided to pursue a different avenue initially and went to university, but didn’t fall in love with what I was doing. I then made the choice to enroll in hair school, it was the best decision I made. I learned if you’re happy, you’re successful. Eight years later and here I am!

What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle?

I love natural looks – really anything that is blended (blondes, Balayage and soft transitions). Creating blondes is what really pushed me to get certified, I enjoy the challenge of producing the perfect dimensional blonde. Creating that instant gratification for clients is such an amazing feeling. Pixie cuts and short hair are my favourite to cut, they’re so great to personalize for each guest.

Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity?

My personal style is different and unique. I enjoy bright colors and fun pieces – when im at work I try to accessorize to be out-of-the-box and funky. My creativity is inspired by travelling. When I am able to travel, I’m always open to new experiences and I like to absorb different styles from all around the world and bring them to my work at home.

What is your favourite Redken product?

My favourite Redken product is the entire Extreme line. I’m a blonde myself and this is my go-to. It keeps hair strong, shiny and healthy so blondes can be as light as they want to be. For styling, I’d have to say Wax Blast. It is both a texture and a hairspray in one so it is very versatile and not too heavy.

When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like?

I took the exam in 2014 with another stylist from the salon. A huge advantage for me was that I work with Barb Horsman, so I was able to utilize her skills and really learn from her. Using and understanding the lithochart was such a huge aspect of the exam. I made flash cards and studied with co-workers to bounce ideas off each other. I took the time to prepare and really understand what I was learning. I’m a big studier, so I was all for it.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified?

Overall, the greatest benefit is simply the knowledge gained from taking it. I learned so much for my career about color when studying for this exam. I had many “aha moments” while preparing. In addition, we have clients that request people specializing in color so it is so great to be able to accommodate those guests.

What sets you apart from other stylists?

Aside from being color certified, I’m also a certified Great Lengths Extension Technician. I love the instant gratification of the makeover and being able to cover all the bases for my clients. My work can range from bright pieces to a full head and seeing my clients happy with their results is so amazing.

Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified?

It really educates you on not only the tone of the color, but also what is in it and how to create different depths. It taught me so much and it pushes you to look at color on a different level. Passing the exam makes you more comfortable behind the chair, I’m never nervous anymore knowing I have that knowledge behind me.

Barb Horsman

When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry?

Hair has always been a passion. As a child, I used to style the neighbourhood girls hair. I’ve loved to watch hair move and create, curl and run my hands through it. However, my journey in the industry began as an esthetician first. Not long after graduating, I decided to make the switch to hairstyling, my true passion. I made the right decision and I have been a stylist for 35 years – 19 years with the Head Shoppe.

What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle?

My favourite color trend would dimensional blondes, the hair looks so interesting with more than one tone running throughout. With longer hairstyles, I really love loose, undone waves. It catches the light in the color and makes it pop more. But arguably, any hair that looks extremely healthy and shiny tops my list!

Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity?

My personal style would be fun and flirty. Creatively, I tend to be drawn towards classic beauty with eye-catching twists. I use Instagram and Facebook for inspiration; however, I love watching young and upcoming stylists in my salon. Another go-to for inspiration is nature itself. I love to photograph colors found in nature that I can use in my work. I enjoy using these aspects to create vibrant, dimensional colors. For example, creating the perfect blonde based off the different tones found in beach sand, reds reflecting the vibrancy of a bonfire, or brunettes pulling warmth from the trees in the wilderness. I always find myself looking for the dimension and tones that I can blend to create a cohesive look.

What is your favourite Redken product?

Right now, my favourite Redken product is pH Bonder. I love the science behind the product and knowing how much it helps in the chemical aspect of the hair color process. It is a real game changer for what I can do with the integrity of the hair. I find that clients can visually notice the difference in the days, weeks and even months later. For me, it is all about the client and that they get their desired look and love their hair – then it’s a win!

When did you take the Redken Certified Haircolorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like?

I took the exam in 2007. I had just 3 weeks to prepare, but I love a challenge and took it upon myself to pass. I studied hard working on mannequin heads with a timer. I can clearly remember the day, I wasn’t nervous, I was excited. I couldn’t wait to start the challenge and grow my career.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified?

The greatest benefit is the confidence that I have behind the chair. It is so amazing to look back into my career and see the growth. In addition, I am currently the Evaluator for the Hair Coloring Certification Program. I facilitate all the current Redken Certified Haircolorist exams. I love to coach and help those who may be interested in taking on the challenge of becoming certified themselves. I want to be support for anyone contemplating doing the exam – I am always here to help.

What sets you apart from other stylists?

I would say the willingness to say no and having the ability to communicate with clients about realistic possibilities. I always work to create a long-term game plan for how to achieve a desired look and handle expectations. I always aim to please, however I like to have a plan in place.

Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Certified Haircolorists?

Other stylists should strive to become certified because you can see the confidence and personal grounding that comes after taking this exam. Plus, achieving this milestone builds the excitement to move forward in their career as well as the ability to balance out nerves when creating colors. They transform from stylists to colorists.

When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry? I have been in the industry for 10 years now, always working in the Spryfield area. As long as I can remember, I always had an interest in hair. As a child I remember going to the salon with my family and being mesmerized at the process. It was so interesting to see the transformations happen right in front of you.

What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle? I love soft looks, like creating a sombre. This color still has dimension but isn’t striking or too bold. I also like to blend as many colors as possible yet create a natural color. Undercutting and disconnected looks are my favourite hairstyles to create right now. I like to take short hair and make it something or funky. I find I’m creating these looks more often, especially with clients who want to change up their style a bit but don’t want anything too crazy – this way I can still add some fun and flair.

Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity? My personal style would be relaxed, comfortable and more on the classic side. I do like and look for some influence of what is trending to mix that in too. I get industry inspiration through magazines, Instagram and YouTube to stay current with what is up-and-coming and trending.

What is your favourite Redken product? For homecare, Redken’s One United is my go-to. I love the benefit of doing a little bit of everything for your hair and every client can take advantage of its 25 benefits.

When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took the exam in 2010. I made it my goal to put in the time and study every piece I was given to be sure I could succeed. It was important to cover all the bases to be ready for the exam and learn to change habits to reflect the proper Redken practices.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified? The overall knowledge I gained from the certification was so important and has stayed with me throughout the years. The exam taught the background of Redken processes and made it so much easier for making choices to create amazing colors.

What sets you apart from other stylists? I’m always trying to create the perfect look for my clients, to do that I need to understand what they’re looking for. I believe the consultation is the most important aspect of the experience in my chair. This allows us to develop a plan together so they leave happy but also in the same time, they get something that is fun, fresh and new.

Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified? It is just going to up your game. Anytime you acquire knowledge you are becoming a better stylist. I always remember a teacher telling me “when you’re green you’re growing, when you’re ripe you rot” you can never know too much and should always be open to learning new techniques and styles.
