When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry? I had always dreamt of being a stylist, I just didn’t always believe in myself. If you love what you do and you’re truly passionate about it, you can do anything you set your mind to.

I’ve been in the industry for 7 years now, and really enjoy working with color. I love being able to create new looks for people and make them feel good about themselves.

What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle? Balayage is my specialty in the salon, and my favourite color trend to create; I hope it never goes away! In terms of hairstyles, right now the lob is my favourite. There is something so satisfying in seeing that nice clean, blunt line in the cut, but I love adding texture to the style for a fun, tousled finish.

Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity? My personal style is a little eclectic. Typically, I lean towards boho trends with more neutral, muted tones. In terms of inspiration, social media is a huge influence for me. I’m always looking for beautiful blends of color, and tips and tricks to better my own business.

What is your favourite Redken product? One of my go-to Redken products is Triple Take hairspray. I love the hold it provides in finishing, but leaves the hair touchable and never flakey. I can’t be without it!

When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took the exam in October 2016. Preparation was intense, practicing with all the material and study guides available. I took the exam with a fellow stylist and we would often go over charts and information together.

What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified?  Passing the exam and becoming certified shows how hard you worked to get where you are and that you are dedicated to your craft. It helps boost confidence in both color correcting and color formulating and pushes you to better meet your clients needs.

What sets you apart from other stylists? I’m an extreme perfectionist. I’m always striving to get my clients the color they’re looking to achieve. I make sure to provide all the information they need, setting realistic expectations on results achievable, while still keeping their hair healthy.

Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified? Other stylists should strive to become Redken Color Certified to really push themselves as a colorist, and truly be the best at Redken color. This exam shows the level of dedication you have for your craft, and how hard you’re willing to work to prove yourself in this industry.

Exam preparation included a lot of studying. I studied with my coworkers and did a lot of technical work with timing and formulas. Practicing reading color charts, color books and litho charts was also a big help.
