Meet Redken Color Certified Hair Stylist Carrie Kennedy
When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry? I have been doing hair for seven years now! I always knew I wanted to be a stylist, I used to practice braiding on my dolls when I was young!
What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle? Freehand techniques, like Balayage are my favourite right now. These styles really allow me show my creativity! I always try to add a bit more to my color services to make each one different! Undercutting and disconnected cuts are also a trend I really enjoy, they’re each so different and allows so much creativity and forces to step outside the box.
Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity? My personal style is slightly edgy but still conservative. I am an artist as well as a hairstylist so I really find inspiration everywhere. I love following other Redken artists online and keeping connected with new styles and techniques.
What is your favourite Redken product? I have many favourites but I really like Redken’s new volume collection (High Rise) – especially the Duo Volumizer. I struggle with fine hair so I am always looking for something to create more volume that won’t weigh hair down and these products are just that!
What sets you apart from other stylists? Being Redken Color Certified as well as a Redken Educator are definitely aspects that helped me to find my niche. I also think that how we present ourselves is a huge aspect. We attract people like us – I really like to create edgy looks and styles so I try to mirror that with my personal style.
When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took the Redken Certified Colorist Exam in 2014. The exam was tough, I knew I really wanted to write the exam and wanted to succeed! I took as many classes as possible to prepare along with lots of studying.
What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified? Becoming certified has really set me apart and forced me to push myself to learn new techniques. I’ve always believed in the importance of enhancing your skills since I joined the industry so this was the best thing to do.
Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified? It really pushes you to be the best of the best. You are really perfecting your skills, so this exam helps with all aspects of the experience you create as a stylist. Your clients are more comfortable in your chair and they know that you will be on the top of your game to give them the best color possible!
