When did you know you wanted to be a hair stylist and how long have you been in the industry? I’ve been in the industry for 10 years, the last five have been at the Truro Head Shoppe. I knew as a teenager that this is what I wanted to do. I was always the one styling my friends hair for school dances – I loved every minute of it! Once I graduated high school I headed straight for the hair design program.
What is your favourite color trend or hairstyle? Right now, my favourite color trend is balayage or anything freehand. I like creating these colors because it is like you’re never doing the same thing twice; it allows me to be creative. In terms of hairstyles, my favourite to create is a blunt bob. You can see the shape so perfectly and bobs are so easy to personalize for my clients and get creative with.
Describe your personal style and tell us what inspires your creativity? My personal style would be casual but trendy. I always have my nails done and enjoy using that as a pop of color to my daily style. Social media and Pinterest inspire my creativity. I always follow people from our company for inspiration; they’re so well educated and think outside the box!
What is your favourite Redken product? My favourite product would be Fabricate. It can be used for everything, ranging from: redoing styles, fixing bedhead, creating shine, and protecting the hair. It is my go-to all in one product that use on most of my clients.
When did you take the Redken Certified Colorist Exam and what was the exam preparation like? I took the exam in May 2017. I used the study material provided, as well as the Redken website for additional information. I also talked to stylists who have taken the exam before for tips and pointers – it really helps to gather as much information as possible and learn from your peers.
What are the greatest benefits you received from becoming certified? It has given me more confidence; I know and understand Redken color in depth. I know which line is better for specific hair types and client needs. It has expanded my options creatively.
What sets you apart from other stylists? My creativity, I don’t like to create the same thing over and over. I like to create new looks and personalize them for each individual client. I also believe in ongoing education and that you should never stop learning.
Why should other stylists strive to become Redken Color Certified? Other stylists should become Redken Color Certified so they are well educated in the color lines as a whole and become more confident in their work.
